Donna Wilson is honoured at being named Citizen of the Year by the Kincardine and District Chamber of Commerce, but she has no time to bask in the glory. The former Kincardine mayor is busy with a far more exciting project. "I'm working on a special event that has never been done before," she says. "I'm working with mayor Larry Kraemer on an Order of Kincardine to present to all of our Second World War veterans." There are about 40 veterans in the Municipality of Kincardine, and Wilson is looking forward to presenting each of them with a special medal for serving their community and their country. The Order of Kincardine ceremony will take place Wednesday, June 22, 2-4 p.m., in the new addition at the Davidson Centre, she says. This is a project of the Kincardine Royal Canadian Legion, says Wilson, and Legion members will be assigned to any veteran who has difficulty getting around, to ensure all the recipients can attend the event. Wilson said she was overwhelmed when she heard she had been named the chamber's citizen of the year, an award sponsored by Bruce Power. "It was like Christmas, New Year's and my birthday all rolled into one," she says. The CKNX radio station also honoured her as the Community Champion for April. Not only was she mayor of the former Town of Kincardine, she was the first female councillor and first female mayor in this area. "I've worked on just about every committee in the community," she says, "and I was secretary of the chamber of commerce in the1970s." She was a member and chairperson of the Children's Aid Society, Social Services, and the Bruce Children Are Special Foundation. Now, her work is mostly with the Kincardine Legion where she is public relations officer. Born and raised in Teeswater, Wilson has lived in Kincardine since 1956. She has one son, two daughters, and seven grandchildren.
