The Saugeen Shores Cham-bettes are once again gearing up for a fundraising whirlwind!

The group that raises funds for local causes is launching its 'Bosom Buddies' fundraising campaign for the month of May and will be taking donations in support of new digital mammography equipment.

There are five hospital foundations that support Grey Bruce Health Services - Meaford, Markdale, Lion's Head, Owen Sound, Southampton and Wiarton.  Of the five, Southampton is second only to Owen Sound in the number of exams.  Together, the foundations are working to raise the funds urgently needed to purchase two new digital mammography machine.

The Owen Sound Regional Hospital is the cancer care centre for Grey-Bruce and provides services to diagnose, treat and monitor cancer patients.  Approximately 10,000 cancer related visits are made to the hospital each year where there are two oncology specialists with a third to be recruited.

The Owen Sound Ontario Breast Screening Program site that opened in 1995 has screened more than 61,000 women in Grey Bruce and detected 328 breast cancers.

The total cost for the two new machines and renovations that have to be made to accommodate them is $1.5 million. Southampton Hospital Foundation has announced that it has set its goal share at $300,000.

There will be several donation boxes at various businesses throughout the community or they can be dropped off at Kimberley's by the Shore in Southampton or Wino's in Port Elgin.  The two locations will also have donation forms for those who want to canvass friends, family, fellow employees or service groups.
