A fire that broke out in Ripley on Saturday is thought to be suspicious.

Ripley fire chief Doug Martyn said a large propane tank was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on the scene at Memorial Park around midnight.

The propane company, Sparlings, indicated that the fire was suspicious because a certain valve on the tank had been tampered with, Martyn said. "I didn't know anything about it, but someone opened it and ignited it and caused it to get a little worse."

Sparlings replaced the tank and took the old one to be examined even though it didn't have any damage. Martyn said the fire department knows it is a suspicious fire, but this type of incident is hard to trace.
