In its continuing effort to ensure the best possible patient care, the South Bruce Grey Health Centre board has hired a director of patient safety and quality improvement. The new director, Debbie Dossantos, brings extensive experience from both a nursing and legal background. She spent 10 years in nursing, working in emergency, critical care and as a nurse educator before pursuing a career in law. Her legal career has included significant project management duties with two organizations and a position as lead counsel for a law firm. “Her mediation and issue management skills, as well as law and nursing background make her an excellent fit with our team,” says Dianne Waram, vice-president of clinical services at the health centre which includes hospitals in Kincardine, Walkerton, Durham and Chesley. The director of quality and patient safety is a new role at the health centre, one created after much discussion and consideration. The centre's infection control officer has had dual responsibility for quality and infection control. Demands on the infection control officer have continued to rise with changing government guidelines, and ongoing construction projects at the four hospitals. "Hospitals are in an era where research and best practice information are driving change at a faster pace than ever before," said Paul Davies, chief executive officer of the health centre, explaining the need for this new position.

"At the same time, the (health) ministry is demanding
increased hospital attention to reporting on quality and patient
safety initiatives. We felt it was time to add the support our team
needed to meet these increased demands.” Recently-announced ministry funding to support quality improvement will partially subsidize this position. The health centre made its quality improvement plan available to the public on April 1.
