The Heart and Stroke Foundation is asking people if they're ready to pedal? The agency's Big Bike is coming to the area next month, and area manager Jason Hoffman says it's the biggest event for increasing awareness and raising funds for the foundation. The 30-seater bike is as big as a school bus and weighs one ton. Participants raise pledges and then board the bike for a tour around their town. Hoffman says the 15-year-old event always has two components to it: raising money for world-class research, and getting people active. Last year it raised just under $75,000 and this year's goal is to hit that mark. It's easy to sign up, says Hoffman. "Give me a call at the office at 519-371-0083, or check out bigbike.ca and register right from there This is a great fund-raising opportunity for businesses, community groups, church groups ... It's a really great way to get active, promote yourself, get out there, be healthy and help raise money for a great cause." He says it's important to support every event the Heart and Stroke Foundation holds because so many people are affected by heart disease. "One in three people die from heart disease," he says. "It's the number one killer of Canadians. Everyone is affected by it, from babies to older adults to middle-aged people. It's so important to take care of our heart health and raise awareness of the number one killer of Canadians. The Big Bike will be coming to Owen Sound on May 9, Hanover on May 10, Wiarton and Port Elgin on May 11, Meaford on May 12, Markdale, Flesherton and Dundalk on May 16, and Kincardine on May 30.
