Q. What is the best thing I can do for my seasonal allergies? A. We are happy that spring is finally here but along with it comes the dreaded allergies for some of us. The best thing one can do is avoid the cause of the allergy. Since this is not always possible, there are medications that can be taken to help relieve the usual symptoms of itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion and sometimes cough. If just the eyes are affected, then an eye drop specific for allergic eyes, such as Opticrom available without a prescription or others by prescription, could be tried. If the symptoms are more widespread, then trying an oral antihistamine, such as Claritin, Aerius, Allegra or Reactine, would be beneficial. Aerius seems to be slightly more effective at getting rid of nasal congestion, but as for the other allergy symptoms, one antihistamine is not any better than another and you may have to try a couple of different options to find the one that works best for you. It is smart to avoid the ones that cause drowsiness, such as Benadryl (diphenhydramine), as there are many other choices that are non-drowsy.

In most cases, a
generic or house brand of the antihistamines is available and will
help save you money. For severe nasal congestion, prescription nasal sprays may be required to reduce the inflammation in the nose. For more information about this or any other health-related questions, contact the pharmacists at Gordon Pharmasave, Your Health and Wellness Destination
