It was a wild, wacky, wonderful day at the 'Celebration of Learning' at G. C. Huston Public School in Southampton, Saugeen Shores Bruce County. Jonny's Junkyard Symphony brought a unique brand of music, theatrics and environmental concerns together in a way that kept the entire student body enthralled.
The group that formed in 1992 in Ottawa, travels through communities and
schools teaching reducing, re-using and recycling. The duo on
Wednesday demonstrated how 'junkyard' finds can be used in an
entertaining way, including fashioning musical instruments out of
ordinary, everyday items.nnovative sports
and games by reusing junk m Children's drumming corps After Jonny's Junkyard Symphony in the afternoon, everyone enjoyed a traditional First Nation supper of corn soup, bannock and homemade fruit breads followed up with a celebration of traditional drumming and song by the Saugeen First Nations Women and dancing. by the Jingle and Fancy dancers of Saugeen. The day was part of Education Week that will include two more days of learning activities. On Thursday (May 6), the Southampton Art School will be working with G.C. Huston students to paint, glaze and fire ceramic tiles for the new 'Gateway to the Arts' project at the Art School. Then, on Friday, well-known author and literacy advocate, David Bouchard, will be spending the day with students. Through music and literacy, Bouchard has become an advocate for 'getting children back to reading'.
