Standing Guard There are some treasures that are hidden in plain sight. Two of them exist on a platform at Pioneer Park in Southampton. Two of them have seen 211 springs. They have seen Napoleon go. They have seen the birth of Canada. They are 32 pound cannon meaning that they fire a ball of 32 pounds in weight. They were the coveted power of the fleet. Yes, there was a bigger cannon at 42 pounds, but the 32s evolved into the standard for the British Navy because of the combination of their broadside power and versatility. Keep in mind that the 32s could stand off beyond Chantry Island on a ship of the line and devastate High Street with accurate fire.
