The new gymnasium addition at the Davidson Centre now has a roof and the inside is taking shape. Superintendent Mike O'Hagan of Henderson Builders, expects the project will be completed by late July or early August. Workers were applying foam insulation Wednesday morning, and putting brick and thermal panels on the east side of the new addition which is being constructed east of the arena into the parking lot area. Three large windows will be installed on the north and south sides of the gym, with narrower windows along the east side, said O'Hagan. The indoor running/walking track has two lanes and circles around the gym on the upper level. The concrete track has been built and will be covered with two inches of flowable concrete and then a rubberized surface. The gym floor will be made of maple and must be installed when humidity is at a certain level, and allowed to cure, said O'Hagan. "We've had a long winter here. Last week was the first time we had no frost in the ground." The windows installed in the east wall of the arena, for the warm viewing area, each contain 12 panes of glass with mullions (steel bars) between the glass panes. O'Hagan said that wall is fire-rated so these are the windows approved by the architect under the Ontario Building Code. They make it difficult to see the entire ice surface, but are required for safety purposes. For the architect's report, click here. There are another six windows at the south end of the arena, also a viewing area, that look out onto the entire ice surface. O'Hagan said once the project is completed, concerns about the pool area not having a back door for allowing in some fresh air, can be resolved. A door on the south side of the entranceway can be opened and used for that purpose. Besides a gym, indoor track and warm viewing room, the project includes new washrooms and change rooms. It began last summer and was to be completed by March 31 this year under requirements for federal and provincial funding. However, an extension was given to the end of October.
The door at left can be opened, allowing fresh air into the pool when that area becomes too hot and humid during swim meets |
