The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 183, Kincardine, has a new president.

maureenKincardine councillor Maureen Couture was treasurer of the Legion and was planning to volunteer on the executive. However, since no name had come forward to be president, she agreed to take on the job.

She says this will give her the opportunity to get to know everyone better and put the skills she has to good use. One important thing, she says, is attracting new members to the Legion.

"I'm looking forward to getting new members - younger members - to join," she says. "Only three per cent of our membership is under 40 years of age. We're also planning to do club room renovations. We're going to have to do some fund-raising. We can't use bingo money for that because they're internal changes. So, we'll raise money separately - go after some grants and see if we can get our club room renovated."

She says once the Legion has the engineer's report stating how much it would cost to renovate, the group can start putting together some fund-raising ideas.

The president's job is very time-consuming, says Couture, which is why most people wouldn't want to take on the position.

Former president Red Larsen had said the Legion would have to close if a president was not elected May 1.
