It was a day of celebration at Bruce Power Nuclear site in Tiverton on Wednesday, May 11 as the company celebrated its 10th anniversary with several dignatiries in attendance.

The day began with breakfast for the employees on site and continue throughout the day with special events, including an outdoor barbeque.  Special visitor, former NHL player, Wendel Clarke, toured the facility handing out autographed hockey cards and autographing a jersey for fan Al Ashton.

Bruce Power officially took over the Bruce site in 2001 after Ontario Power Generation (OPG) had made plans to decommission the site.  Long-time employees had been transferred to other sites such as Darlington and Pickering and, for all intents and purposes, the Bruce site was coming to an end.

It was then that British Energy stepped in and OPG leased the stations and site to the company.  Initially, the plan was to operate the remaining four units until decommissioning.  British Energy PLC, Cameco, the Power Workers' Union and the Society of Energy Professional invested in the new company known as Bruce Power.

Bruce Power, within months, began an entirely new initiative and, in fact, won the Financial Times' Global Energy Award for Successful Investment Decision of the Year.

Today, the company is looking at bringing Unit 2 into operation by the end of this year (2011) and, "  when Units 1 and 2 are synchronized to the grid in 2012, it will be the first time that all eight units will be running at the same time."

Bruce County Warden and Saugeen Shores Mayor, Mike Smith, remembered his days at Bruce Power as an Engineer

As part of the 10-year anniversary, employees were asked to enter a competition of 'Favourite Memories of Bruce Power', with winners receiving a variety of gifts ranging from Blue Jay baseball tickets to gift certificates.

"It's been proven time and again," said Hawthorne, "that if you give people a good work environment, they will contribute to the company.  I am an engineer at heart but always knew that the potential was here.  We've now laid the foundation and the next 18 months will be the next big step and 10 years from now, it will be time for the refurbishment cycle again."

One of the highlights of the day was the announcement that Bruce Power is donating $150,000 to the new Children's Safety Village in Hanover that will serve all the children in Grey and Bruce Counties.  The Village is being designed on a model town where elementary school children will have the opportunity to learn various safety procedures in a hands-on environment.
