Kincardine council has approved the construction of a gazebo and entrance gate posts at the Tiverton Fairgrounds, ,just in time for the 150th annual Tiverton Fall Fair, Sept. 30 to Oct. 2, 2011.

In committee-of-the-whole Wednesday night (May 18), recreation director Karen Kieffer said the project would be done at no cost to the municipality. The gazebo would be a co-operation project between the Tiverton Agricultural Society and the Kincardine District Secondary School construction program, and the gate posts would be built by a local construction company.

The agricultural society would also like to enter into a one-year agreement with the municipality, taking on responsibility for the maintenance and insurance of the gazebo and gate posts, said Kieffer.

Councillor Randy Roppel suggested the recreation department check where the property line is along Ross Street, before the project proceeds.

Councillor Jacqueline Faubert suggested Kieffer look into obtaining Spruce the Bruce grants through Bruce County council which would help with the cost of the project.

Councillor Kenneth Craig said the new stone gate posts would not initially be the entrance to the fairgrounds, but over the long-term could become the main entrance.

Dennis Munro of the agricultural society told council that the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs has presented the society with a bronze plaque in recognition of its 150th annual Tiverton Fall Fair. That plaque will be posted on one of the gate posts, he said.

Later, in council session, the project received final approval. The municipality will also provide some assistance through its public works staff.
