‘The Longest Day of PLAY in Bruce – Grey Countywide Challenge’ will be coming to Bruce – Grey on July 21st, 2011, also known as the longest day of the year.

This first annual event , involving funding from Trillium and the Grey-Bruce Health Unit, is expected to take off, targeting the nearly half of Grey Bruce residents their families and friends who are considered inactive while enticing communities in the area to participate in the event for some good old-fashioned fun.

"The primary intent is to decrease obesity and increase activity,” said Catherine Smart, PLAY Coordinator. Smart went on to discuss how children today are mostly inactive, often spending more time alone and sometimes resulting in depression because of a lack of activity.

One contact will be designated to log the most number of PLAY participants in each municipality, with prizes , including soccer balls, Frisbees, water bottles and other prizes related to fitness, being handed out to the community with the most logged-in participants. A kit will be provided to each municipality to get them started in organizing the event in their area. “ All the prizes are really meant to encourage activities,” said Smart.

For more information on participating in PLAY and how to get started, contact Catherine Smart at Catherine@smartmove.ca  or (705) 606-0985, or Jason Weppler at the Grey – Bruce Health Unit at (519) 376-9420, extension 1408.
