Kincardine council has endorsed the presentation of the Order of Kincardine medal to local war veterans.

Mayor Larry Kraemer has been working with Kincardine Legion members Donna Wilson and Irv Kennedy to create an award of this kind and present it at a special ceremony on June 22, 2-4 p.m., at the Davidson Centre.

Kraemer showed the Order of Kincardine medal to council earlier this month and said the cost will be about $2,000, including a medal on a ribbon and a scroll for each war veteran.

"It's a way for the municipality to honour those who made the sacrifice for all Canadians to ensure our freedom and way of life," said Kraemer.

Councillor Maureen Couture said it is a great way of recognizing the local war veterans.

The Order of Kincardine is currently just for veterans, said councillor Kenneth Craig, but criteria could be established for presenting it to other deserving individuals.

Councillor Randy Roppel said the medal should read Order of the Municipality of Kincardine so that all war veterans are recognized.

Craig said that is a bit excessive. "For the purpose of this presentation, it is understood that it's the entire municipality - leave it as the Order of Kincardine."

Kraemer agreed, noting that the Order of Canada inherently means the entire country.

He said there is money in the budget to cover the cost of this project.

Council agreed with the medal and the presentation ceremony on June 22.

Wilson adds this note to all Second World War veterans and Korean War veterans:

"If you reside or own property in the Municipality of Kincardine and did not receive an invitation or require transportation to the “Order of Kincardine Ceremony and Celebration” on Wednesday, June 22, please contact me at 519-396-7146. The ceremony will take place at the Davidson Centre and commence at 2 p.m. Lunch will be served after the ceremony.
