Deputy Mayor, Luke Charbonneau, chairs council meeting

Kathryn Eastwood, President Royal Canadian Legion Branch #340 and Marilyn Nobel, President Royal Canadian Legion Branch #155 came before Saugeen Shores Town Council, Monday June 13, with two recommendations.

"As we know," said Eastwood, "Our troops will begin to come home from Afghanistan this summer and we (Legion) would like to see everyone participate in a Yellow Ribbon Campaign."

The Campaign would see retailers, municipalities and individuals decorate with yellow ribbons in recognition of the returning service men and women.

"This is an idea that began right here in Saugeen Shores," says Eastwood, "and we hope it will inspire others to do the same."

Councilor Diane Huber asked if there any special steps that would have to be taken with the province before ribbons could be placed on the section of highway under its jurisdiction.

Deputy Mayor Charbonneau said that he thinks the idea is a "great one".  "I'm pleased to see that you have taken this step to recognize our service men and women ... if there is an issue about the highway, I'm sure staff will take care of it.|

The second recommendation is to have the section of Highway 21 north of Kincardine declared the Bluewater Veterans' Highway.

"The Legions have received support from local municipalities," said Eastwood, "and have, in fact, spearheaded this movement.  If it is done through the municipalities, then the Ministry (MTO) will pay for the signage.  This is something that will give our men and women a boost to their morale."

"In my opinion," said Councilor Thead Seaman, "we should do everything we can to support this."

"I have driven that section of the highway and have often wondered why this hasn't come forward," added Deputy Mayor Charbonneau, "and I think we should definitely support this."

Vice Deputy Mayor suggested that perhaps a formal motion should be brought forward to formalize the request.
