Huron-Kinloss Township is hosting the Longest Day of PLAY in Bruce Grey on Tuesday, June 21.

This community-wide challenge is part of a county-wide initiative designed to engage municipalities, schools, community partners and residents to get active on the first day of summer.

"So, we at the Township of Huron-Kinloss need to do our part to participate, by PLAYing our parks," says Mike Fair, parks and recreation director.

"Come to Lewis Park in Ripley, Lucknow Lions Park in Lucknow or Point Clark Community Centre Park in Point Clark, on Tuesday, June 21, at 6:30 p.m., and participate in the community-wide game of Capture the Flag," says Fair. "The game will be ongoing and participants selected at random will receive T-shirts, tattoos and stickers for participating."

He urges children and adults to participate and follow PLAY initiatives to be active and have fun and participate in unstructured, informal activity.

Play is an essential part of childhood development:
  • Play is spontaneous, accessible to all and low-cost/free.
  • Play occurs when you want, how you want and respects personal choice.
  • Play brings families, neighbourhoods and communities together.
  • Play requires little or no skill and no special equipment.
  • Play is a universal concept and provides personal meaning to physical activity.
  • Play can happen anywhere and does not require special facilities or organization.
  • Play is well understood by children and can be shared with their families.

The township also encourages residents to participate in PLAY all the time; why not make every Tuesday night family park night?

Parents are to come with their children and lead their children and friends in games and activities at the park.

Some Suggestions:

  • Play “Follow the Leader”, “Simon Says”, “Red Light/Green Light”, or “Capture the Flag”.
  • Play Frisbee.
  • Plan a picnic.
  • Fly a kite.
  • Blow bubbles and try catching them.
  • Organize a scavenger hunt for your family and friends.

Have fun, be active and participate in family activities.
