The Municipality of Kincardine is participating in the Grey-Bruce county-wide challenge in the first annual Longest Day of PLAY, Tuesday, June 21.

Municipalities who log the most number of hours will receive a PLAY basket full of great items to share with the whole community.

Kincardine's Longest Day of PLAY includes:

Free Master Blast Fitness Class, 6:30 p.m. at the Davidson Centre. Fitness instructors are working together to provide a fitness class you won't want to miss. Participants will get to try out some moves from all of the different fitness classes: Zumba, Boot Camp, Functional Fitness and Cardio Blast.

Play in the Park and Barbecue, 6 p.m., Lions Park . Come out to Lions Park and greet old friends and meet new friends. The 2011 playground staff will be on hand with the parachute, face paint and playground games. Kincardine's Youth Committee, "Youth Waves," will be serving hot dogs and drinks for a small donation.

Play in the Pool, 7 p.m. Come out for a swim in the Davidson Centre Pool. Regular admission applies.

The Longest Day of PLAY in Bruce and Grey is a challenge to help communities become more active, says Jason Weppler, health promoter with the Grey Bruce

"We are trapped in an environment that actually encourages obesity," he says. "The car culture in Grey-Bruce encourages us to drive everywhere. Pedestrians are a rare species, often in peril. Walking is usually low on the priority list for transportation planning, if considered at all."

He says the result is that about three out of every five Grey-Bruce residents are overweight or obese.

The PLAY in Bruce-Grey initiative is initiating municipalities to celebrate the first annual "Longest Day of PLAY" county-wide challenge, says Weppler.

"June 21 marks the first day of summer and is the longest day of the year," he says. "All community members residing in Bruce and Grey are invited and encouraged to participate."

"Community members and leaders in Grey-Bruce are taking important steps toward championing increased activity which will surely lead to a healthier, more vibrant region," says Cathy Smart, PLAY in Bruce Grey co-ordinator. "Choosing to bring communities together to share and enjoy daily physical activity in their own communities is a fantastic way to promote change.”

The health unit and the Ontario Trillium Foundation are the primary supporters of this event. Many communities have signed the memorandum of agreement with the intent that all 17 municipalities will participate in at least one community activity during the “Longest Day of PLAY."
