The South Bruce Grey Health Centre - Kincardine Hospital Auxiliary has experienced another spring filled with events, achievements, and rewards.

The Spring Card Party April 12 was set up in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church Hall with 20 tables covered with pastel blue, yellow and pink tablecloths and the common spring multi-coloured primula.

Shirley Riggin, Lesley Edwards and crew, once again, provided a delicious lunch of sandwiches, squares, tea and coffee, followed by an afternoon of playing bridge, euchre or the game of your choice.

April 28-29, Nancy Potter and staff of the Auxiliary Gift Shop held a Spring Preview and Sale. Displayed were great new products and lots of bargains, and Potter is featuring a different sale item each month.

The beautiful white cotton nightgowns and sleepwear were on sale for the month of May. Do keep watching and visiting this amazing little shop!

Next was the Annual Geranium Sale/pick-up in Victoria Park on May 19. Susan, Rick and staff of Quinn Florist provided the 1,988, red-, white-, hot pink- and light-salmon-coloured geraniums.

Thanks to Ron Elliott, Jack Nancekivell and Jake Johnstone for delivering the plants to the park. All of our members contributed to this hugely successful event, either by recruiting pre-sales or the group of “flower girls” who helped in the park. We sold 1,997 flowers which have added colour to the area, and we express sincere thanks for the continued support from the community.

The money raised by the auxiliary goes toward the purchase of up-to-date medical equipment which helps the Kincardine hospital keep pace with the advanced medical technology and research.

In 2010, we purchased three monitors, a stretcher and a laryngoscope system. The laryngoscope system provides improved patient safety with visualization and lighting during intubation for use in the operating room.

Auxiliary president Kaye MacDonald, treasurer Jean Colling and secretary/press reporter Betty Johnstone recently visited the Kincardine hospital site to get an up-close look at the three pieces of equipment purchased for the emergency department.

Emergency department manager Ollie Regier and co-operative education student Lainey Ogilvie were only too willing and enthused to provide a hands-on demonstration of the new Trauma Stretcher; N85o2 Monitor, with the capacity to monitor Co2; and Vital Signs Monitor. Regier was very informative and anxious to show us how the new stretcher requires less lifting when caring for trauma patients and decreases the need for staff to move patients for x-rays, etc.

The Patient Television Rental committee, headed by long-time convener Sheila Elliott, has persevered through many challenges. It is now extremely relieved and thankful this service has been updated and revamped over the past year.

There are outlets in every room and TVs at each bedside with eight brand new LCD-HD flat screen sets. Thanks again to the Power Workers’ Union and Bethel United Church Women for their donations toward this valuable, worthwhile program.

Needless to say, a motion has been passed at our last meeting to increase the daily cost of the rental fee to $8 from $7.

On the same day as previously mentioned, co-convener Jean Colling and one of our very hard working, dedicated volunteers, showed Kaye MacDonald how easy it is now to hook up and move these new sets. No need to lift and struggle with the previous heavy support arms.

We are forever grateful for the support, guidance and assistance received from Doug Miske, facility manager, and staff to complete this transition. The committee extends a big “thank you” to all the volunteers who help deliver this service to the patients.

The Patients’ Lounge now also has a large screen TV. Thanks to Donna and Richard Rock for donating this Sony television to the auxiliary. This lounge was furnished by the auxiliary in 2009 and the patients who do not wish to have a bedside TV have the opportunity to “view the evening news” or important events, such as the recent April 29 Royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Lying on the new trauma stretcher is Lainey Ogilvie, co-op student, while Ollie Regier, emergency department manager, shows the area on the stretcher where x-rays can be placed and this decreases the need for staff to move a patient

Jean Colling (L), auxiliary treasurer and co-convener of the Patient TV Rental Program, shows president Kaye MacDonald one of the new LCD-HD television sets available for the patients to rent at their bedside

Finally, but not least, at the May 25 meeting, Sylvia Abbot, on behalf of Mary Lou McKee and Judith Bond, had the pleasure of presenting president Kaye MacDonald with her five-year membership award and certificate. Congratulations Kaye and thanks for taking on the role of president in 2010. Kaye’s enthusiasm and experienced leadership are totally awesome and extremely appreciated.

Our next meeting will be June 22 at 6 p.m., at the summer place of Shirley Eaton on the shores of beautiful Bruce Beach. Pot luck dinner and a surprise speaker!
