It was a night of celebration at the Tiverton and District Lions Club's year-end meeting Tuesday night at the Lions Hall. The club presented two Melvin Jones Fellowship awards to members who have shown their dedication to their club, to their community and to humanitarian service, to the highest degree. District A9 Governor John Stewart and his wife, Mary Lou, were on hand to assist with the presentations. Lion Rosemary Grover said the first recipient, Jim McTeer, is a very deserving Tiverton Lion. He joined the club in January, 2002, and was president in 2006-07. He has worked on the membership committee, the District A9 Convention committee in 2009, and he is always available to help his fellow Lions when needed at functions, such as the Tiverton Reunion, Christmas hampers, Seniors Christmas Dinner, yard sales, Walk of Memories, Fall Fair breakfasts, Winterfest, Easter Egg Hunts, bartending, and barbecuing. "If there is a Lions event going on, Jim will be there working quietly wherever he is needed," said Grover. He has a passion for Dog Guides and has shown his dedication to this Lions project by being chairman of the Walk for Dog Guides since 2004. McTeer has been on the Community Centre Board for eight years, and chairman of the board for six years. He has spent many hours at the Whitney Crawford Community Centre in Tiverton. With the right tape measure, there is always room for one more vehicle in the Annex for winter storage. "He has taken an active role to serve his club and the community since he joined the Tiverton Lions nine years ago," said Grover. "Congratulations, Lion Jim." Lion Brent Crawford said the second recipient, Ruby MacLennan, is one of those club members who can get things done. "She has just completed 20 years of service and I believe has had perfect attendance for those 20 years of membership," said Crawford. "You can be sure Lion Ruby has been involved in any project that requires food: the seniors dinners, Easter Egg Hunt, auction sales, garage sales, Christmas hampers, zone meetings and region rallies. She is famous for getting the best price on the supplies needed for those projects." MacLennan has been a one-year and two-year director many times and is working her way through the vice-presidents chairs to soon become the club president, said Crawford. "This hard-working Lion speaks her mind and although we don't always agree, there is one thing we can all certainly agree on - her unselfish service through the Lions Club to the community is an example for all of us. No one will do without, if she has her way. "I am pleased and happy to present this award to Lion Ruby." The Melvin Jones Fellow is named after the founder of Lions Clubs International. Due to the growth of the fellowship program, the Lions Clubs International Foundation has been able to meet humanitarian needs in communities around the world. Fellowship contributions help bring medication to prevent river blindness in people in developing countries, and teach children to avoid drugs through Lions Quest.
