Ollie Regier has $500 more to put toward education costs, having won the RBC Royal Bank nursing excellence award.

The emergency room nurse at the South Bruce Grey Health Centre, Kincardine, received her award Friday afternoon from RBC Kincardine branch manager Christine Maxwell and manager of client care Marilyn Freer.

Maxwell said that nominations of deserving candidates were received at all branches of RBC Royal Bank, and customers were encouraged to vote for their favourite nurses.

When the votes were tallied, Regier was the winner for the Kincardine area.

"I"m overwhelmed and honoured to be chosen," said Regier who has already taken a couple of courses through St. Mary's Hospital in Kitchener, toward her leadership and management certificate.

She is very appreciative of the RBC donation and will put it toward completing her certificate at McMaster University.

In total, RBC Royal Bank presented bursaries to seven nurses.

"Nurses are the heart of our health care system and take care of our friends and families in their greatest time of need," said Bruce Gehlen, RBC's regional vice-president for Central Ontario.

"The community's overwhelming participation in the nursing excellence award clearly shows the appreciation for everything our local nurses do to keep us healthy."

The award is part of a larger $70,000 commitment to the professional development of nurses in Grey, Bruce, Wellington and Dufferin counties. Hospital representatives nominated nurses based on their commitment to continuing education, compassion toward others, and willingness to go beyond the call of duty.

In other news at the Kincardine RBC Royal Bank, long-time employee Kathy Buehlow retired Friday after 37 years (less 55 days) at the branch.

She has lived in Kincardine for 40 years and is looking forward to retirement.

"My daughter is getting married; my husband, Ray, and I want to travel out East; and I'm going to sit back and enjoy the summer," she said.
