A great crowd turned out Saturday to help Huron Telecommunications celebrate its 100th anniversary, at the office in Ripley. General manager Glenn Grubb welcomed everyone and noted that since March, 1911, Huron Telecommunications Co-operative Ltd. has provided local telephone service to Huron-Kinloss and the surrounding area.
General manager Glenn Grubb Formerly, the Huron and Kinloss Municipal Telephone System, HuronTel was one of the first "subscriber-owned" municipal telephone systems in Ontario. Located in the heart of Ripley and with a satellite office in Goderich, the company provides a wide spectrum of telecommunications services, including voice, data (including LAN extension services), Internet, security and cellular, to about 10,000 homes, businesses, health care and educational institutions in midwestern Ontario. HuronTel also installs and maintains residential and business telephone systems. Grubb said the company is now installing fibre-optics which will improve the Internet service, particularly for rural residents. "We've come a long way in 100 years, but we have a long way to go," he said, "and we are ever mindful that without our hardworking staff and our loyal customers, HuronTel would not exist." He offered appreciation to those who started the company and all who have contributed toward making it one of the most successful telecommunications companies in the country. Huron-Kinloss mayor Mitch Twolan congratulated HuronTel on its success and in celebrating its 100th anniversary. "I'm glad to see so many people here," he said. "It's amazing when you think about how far this company has come and then you look at the ever-changing technology going into the future. A lot of credit goes to Glenn (Grubb) and his board and the many knowledgeable and skilled staff who work so hard for the community of Huron-Kinloss. On behalf of the council and the municipality, congratulations." Standing in front of a wagon, featuring the banner that celebrates HuronTel's slogan of "100 years and growing," Grubb explained that the bent and twisted silver tree on the wagon represents the strength and roots of the 100-year-old company, and the new shoots of growth that are the future. The celebration included entertainment by Jaquelyn Lowry, P.J. Main and Scott Chow; beef-on-a-bun served by the Ripley and District Lions Club; balloon animals and face-painting by Snippity the Clown of Goderich; and hot dogs, pop and water, and cupcakes served by HuronTel employees and helpers. Inside the HuronTel office was a display of historic photographs, outlining the company's past.
