Rick Clarke brought a request to Kincardine council Wednesday night (July 13) to allow the closure of Queen Street for an Outdoor Street Market Aug. 15. As the new Kincardine Business Improvement Area (BIA) downtown development manager, Clarke asked for the commercial core to be closed to vehicular traffic from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for this new venture. "The intent of this event is to attract the many visitors who attend the highly-successful Monday Market in the Park in Victoria Park," said Clarke. "It will allow merchants downtown the opportunity to participate, giving them space on the main street in front of their businesses to sell items and encourage market-goers to explore more of the downtown." This is a pilot project, he said, and based on its success, the Lakeside Downtown Kincardine BIA can decide on future ventures of this nature. On the job for only a month, Clarke said the BIA initially wanted to close the downtown commercial core every Monday in August, but has decided to try it for just one Monday (Aug. 15). "It's a good idea," said councillor Maureen Couture. "Do it as a pilot project and see how it goes. It's a good promotion." Council agreed. The BIA is also holding a Summer Street Market event on Sunday, July 31, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
