What would you change in the Municipality of Kincardine?

That's what the consultants with Kincardine's Sustainable Action Committee want to know.

LURA (Listen Understand Relate Advance) Consulting has been hired by the municipality to complete an integrated community sustainability plan, providing strategic guidance for current and future municipal decision-making toward a cleaner, more attractive, more sustainable future for Kincardine.

About 35 people, including council members, heads of local organizations, and residents, gathered at the Kincardine Pavilion for the first meeting July 11 to discuss the logistics of developing this sustainability plan.

Besides the idea of clarifying visions and goals, Kincardine must complete this plan in order to qualify for funding through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities' Green Municipal Fund.

Liz Nield of LURA said sustainable planning means meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the abilities of future generations to meet their needs.

The sustainability plan will offer goals and actions to implement over the next two to five to 10 years, she said. "This plan will tell you where your priorities are in the short-term and the long-term."

The Sustainable Action Committee was divided into three groups to take a closer look at the three pillars of sustainability: the economy, environment and socio-cultural aspects.

The economy group came up with the following priorities: co-ordinate common purpose; youth retention and attraction; need more opportunities and jobs; training and economic development; wireless Internet service at the beach.

The environment group came up with the following priorities: ecological integrity; future sustainable development; rural food planning; parks and trails; waste management.

The socio-cultural group came up with the following priorities: co-operate and co-exist with diverse population; municipal understanding of the economic value of arts, culture and heritage; local access to services such as health care and education.

The next meeting of the Sustainable Action Committee is in September.

Meanwhile, the public is encouraged to offer input through a survey which you can find on the front page of the Kincardine Times, under the Kincardine municipal ad, or call 519-396-3468, Ext. 115.

Or complete a paper questionnaire at various coffee shops, public buildings and grocery stores around Kincardine.
