In 2011-12, there will be over 1,300 Specialist High Skills Majors programs in 600 high schools across Ontario - an increase from 1,000 programs in 540 schools.

This is the fifth year that the province has expanding the number of Specialist High Skills Major programs to meet the growing demand.

Starting this September, there will be 15 Specialist High Skills Majors offered this year in all nine Huron-Bruce high schools in sectors such as Agriculture, Energy, Construction and Information and Communications Technology. Through these programs, students earn credits while developing the skills needed for college, university, apprenticeship or the workplace.

More than 34,000 students will be enrolled in the programs, an increase of 6,000 students.

"With such a great variety of programs in Huron-Bruce," says MPP Carol Mitchell, "local students can now get hands on practical training close to  home to help them find meaningful employment.  Our graduation rates are improving province-wide and these programs are creating unique opportunities for young people."
