The Kincardine Youth Waves coalition is moving ahead with plans to apply for a “Youth-Friendly Community” designation after receiving the support of the Municipality of Kincardine. This designation recognizes communities that provide opportunities for “youth play”, which includes anything that a young person (ages 13-19) does in his/her free time that is not a requirement for school or work. Over the next four months, we will be working closely with the community to meet our Dec. 1 application deadline. Play Works Partnership, the organization in charge of the Youth-Friendly designation, has laid out 16 criteria for Youth-Friendly Communities. To see what each of these criteria are and how other communities have met them, check the website at: www.playworkspartnership.ca . For each criterion, we must provide an outline of all the ways we meet that criterion, and provide supporting documentation. These documents can be things such as: pictures, videos, newspaper articles, personal letters, minutes from meetings; anything you have that shows youth are involved in the activity counts. Over the next four weeks, we are hoping to gather as much information as possible. If you, or anyone you know, have access to anything that might be useful, we urge you to send it to us.
