It matters not whether you're a farmer, whether you've lived on a farm or even visited a farm, you'll find the Bluewater Summer Playhouse production of "Funny Farmers" really funny. An outright spoof of Bruce County, Kincardine and all that is held sacred in this area, the story introduces the audience to the "semi-fictional" township of "Quenkardine" in "Spruce County." There's mention of nearby "Shiverton," "Dipley," "Noluck," and "Peeswater," amid the hilarious adventures throughout the show. Martin Lindquist plays "Jerry," the lawyer-turned-farmer who wants to return to nature, get in touch with his environmental roots and become an organic farmer. Kevin Riordan is "Gary," an actual farmer who lost the family farm during hard financial times, only to have Jerry purchase it. And so the story goes back and forth as the would-be farmer attempts some wild and crazy schemes while getting advice from the actual farmer who is now a Wal-Mart greeter. At one point, Lindquist plays Gary's wife, and later, Riordan plays Jerry's wife, which adds to the hilarity of the show. Both Lindquist and Riordan are stellar in their roles, whether they are performing alone on stage, or sparring verbally with each other. The play touches on the whole wind turbine controversy, with Jerry asking why these projects aren't built in the middle of nowhere, and Gary shoots back that Spruce County is in the middle of nowhere. Together, they finally stumble on a way to make the farm profitable and ultimately, a tourist destination. It's a great laugh from start to finish - written and produced by Riordan, with director Heidi Pack. The play opened July 19 and runs only two more nights, Thursday and Friday, July 21-22, at 8 p.m., at the Kincardine Arts Centre.
