According to a recent consultant's report, the Southampton Town Hall is "...in very good shape". Thor Dingham, a Heritage consultant brought in by the Town of Saugeen Shores to do an inspection of the Southampton Town Hall, gave his report at the recent Town Council meeting. The meeting was actually held in the Heritage Building as part of its 100th anniversary celebration with Council member dressed in early century attire. Dingham pointed out that the masonry of the building is well done and needed only a few minor repairs along with the replacement of a couple of windows. "On the inside," said Dingham, "I would like to see the dropped ceiling removed to expose the historical vaulted ceiling and, possibly, the kitchen area expanded." Dingham also reinforced several of his recommendations with slides. "There are actually some historical paintings above the present dropped ceiling that few people area aware of." According to Dingham, the building is "... in remarkable condition given the era in which it was built. The masonry brickwork is excellent. " He also pointed out that the Town Hall is at the centre of the Southampton downtown core and is also the social and cultural centre for the community. "It is an important part of the town's heritage and history" said Dingham, "and because it has been designated a heritage building, this report completes the picture of restoration improvements that can be made in the future. Overall, however, the building is in very good condition."
