Marine Heritage Concert a tribute to volunteers

As part of the Marine Heritage Festival held over the August 1st long weekend, a 'marine-themed' fundraising concert was held in the Southampton Town Hall. 

The concert was designed as a tribute to the Chantry Island volunteers in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the restoration of the Lighthouse Keepers' quarters and the island.

The organization, the Propeller Club and Marine Heritage Society, have been maintaining the Island for the past 10 years and conducting tours to the Island for visitors.

Mike Sterling

Mike Sterling, who spearheaded the small group of retirees that began the Island restoration, also organized the concert, 'We Were Here', drawing in many local performers in addition to professional musicians from throughout Ontario and the U.S.

With the backdrop of the Chantry Island Imperial tower painted by artist Eric Luce and Mike Sterling on the wall, it appeared as though the concert were taking place on the Island itself.  In addition, Luce's series of lighthouse paintings adorned the walls of the Town Hall.

David Archibald

Consummate performer David Archibald also emceed the evening's production in addition to entertaining the audience with his original renditions of music that focused on the Great Lakes and involved the audience in interactive participation.

Harry Carson

From Detroit, Michigan, jazz pianist Harry Carson added his unique stylings to the program and also accompanied local singer, Sandy Lee Lindsay on some selections.

Steve Wilson & Victoria Serda

Local performers Steve Wilson and Victoria Serda entertained with both original tunes written by Wilson and more well-known renditions that included the ever-popular 'Me and Bobby McGee', among others where the audience had the opportunity to sing along.

Bill Laur

Well-known Southampton artist and entertainer, Bill Laur, was a big hit as he performed original material that he composed for the concert.

David Archibald & daughter, Renee

Like father, like daughter, Renee Archibald performed with father David Archibald.

Closing the show, was the arrangement of  'Memories' by pianist extraordinaire, Doug Squire, who accompanied  vocalist, Sandy Lee Lindsay.
