On behalf of Kincardine Youth Waves and Bruce Community Futures Development Corporation, thanks to everyone who has submitted information to help us move forward with our “Youth-Friendly Community” designation for the Municipality of Kincardine.

If you missed our letter in the Kincardine Times July 29, Kincardine’s Youth Waves Coalition, with the help of Bruce CFDC, is collecting supporting documentation of opportunities for “youth play” to use as part of our application for a “Youth-Friendly” designation from Play Works Partnership.

“Youth play” is defined as anything that a young person (ages 13-19) does in his/her free time that is not a requirement for school or work. Our application is due on Dec. 1, and we’re hoping to get as much input from the community as possible in the four months leading up to that deadline.

To apply for a “Youth-Friendly” designation, we must provide support for up to 16 different criteria that Play Works Partnership has set out for “Youth-Friendly Communities”. You can find the full list of criteria at www.playworkspartnership.ca along with a list of ways that other communities have met them.

Last week, we asked for input on the first four criteria, and we’ve received some great feedback so far, but we’re always looking for more, so if you know of anything we might have missed, or you want to have your story heard, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

This week, we’ll lay out the next four criteria (No. 5-8). If you know of anything that we might be able to use for evidence of these criteria in Kincardine, you can E-mail us at youthfriendlykincardine@gmail.com, phone Sarah Blackwood at the Bruce Community Futures Development Corporation office at 519-396-8141 or visit the Bruce CFDC office at the corner of Huron Terrace and Broadway.

5. The community supports public youth events.

Examples: Summer Music Festival, Silver Stick Tournament, Christmas Knights

For this category we are looking for events that demonstrate community support of youth. These can be annual or one-time events run by youth for the community, co-run by youth and adults for the community or run by adults for youth.

6. The community celebrates and recognizes its youth.

Examples: Newspaper Articles, Citizenship Awards, Scholarships, Sports Awards

For this category we are looking for ways that the community recognizes the participation and contributions of youth. This could be part of a program that recognizes a variety of ages, some of which are youth.

7. The community commits funding for youth play.

Examples: Businesses sponsoring sports teams, Sponsorship of robotics program

For this category we are looking for ways that financial support is provided to promote youth play. This can be sponsorship, donations or grants provided on an ongoing or one-time basis from individuals, businesses and municipal government.

8. The community supports positive youth development.

Examples: Link Crew, High School Symposium, 4-H, Co-op Programs

For this category we are looking for opportunities for the positive development of youth. Individuals who embody this criterion are seen as role models and mentors for youth.

We look forward to hearing all of your ideas and suggestions on the above criteria. Next week we’ll be thinking about criteria 9-12, so look forward to that.

Thanks again to everyone we’ve heard from so far, and keep those great ideas coming!
