The Kincardine Summer Music Festival's free afternoon concerts in Victoria Park were enjoying good weather until Wednesday night (Aug. 10). The storm clouds blew in off Lake Huron as the sky opened and the rain came down, causing the organizers to move the musicians and audience indoors at the Kincardine United Church. Performing were "The Pleats,” a local group that plays a variety of music, ranging from Celtic and Country Bluegrass to Folk and Old-Tyme Fiddle. Its unique three-part harmonies sung by Nicole Reid, Laurie Dalton and Brenda Manderson, are enhanced by the bagpipes and drums played by Nick Reid. This group uses a variety of guitar, bass, keyboard, violin, bagpipes, shuttle pipes, flute and drums to round out its distinctive sound. Ivan Smith, music festival sound man, was able to bring out the wonderful sound of this group, using great sound equipment and the natural acoustics of the United Church. The concert was a delight for the full house of spectators who broke out into rhythmic clapping to some terrific fiddle tunes. The Pleats include Laurie Dalton on bass guitar, acoustic guitar and vocals; Brenda Manderson on piano, flute, acoustic guitar and vocals; Nicole Reid on fiddle, acoustic guitar and vocals; and Nick Reid on Great Highland bagpipes, shuttle pipes, snare and Djembe. The music festival wrapped up Saturday, Aug. 13, with a student showcase in the afternoon at Knox Presbyterian Church.
