Do you know someone who is a champion for youth play? We want to know who!

Kincardine Youth Waves and Bruce Community Futures Development Corporation are working together to apply for a “Youth-Friendly” designation for the Municipality of Kincardine. To achieve this, we must meet at least 10 of 16 criteria set out by Play Works Partnership. You can find the full list of criteria at www.playworkspartnership.ca along with a list of ways that other communities have met them.

If you missed any of the previous weeks, take a look at the list, and let us know how you think Kincardine is doing.

For each criterion, we are collecting documentation of “youth play”. “Youth play” is defined as anything that a young person (ages 13-19) does in his/her free time that is not a requirement for school or work.

Our application is due Dec. 1, and we’re hoping to get as much input from the community as possible in the months leading up to that deadline. This week will cover the final four criteria, but you can contact us at any point and we will add your information to our database.

13. Youth can get to the play programs that are offered.

Examples: Carpooling, Places for youth play are centralized

For this category we are looking for ways in which youth get to the events, programs and activities that they participate in. Did your soccer team organize carpooling? Are facilities within walking distance of your home and school?

14. Schools support the youth-friendly approach.

Examples: Community & School Agreements, Community Use of School Space

For this category we are looking for examples of co-operation between schools at all levels and the community at large. Do they provide space for public use? Are schools considered part of the community?

15. Adults champion the need for youth play.

Examples: Teachers, Mentors, Organizing Committees

For this category we are looking for people who have a real interest in creating opportunities for youth play. We would love to hear from youth about who has been a champion for youth play in your life. Now is the time to give recognition to someone you believe is really making a difference in the lives of youth.

16. Play is inclusive.

Examples: All youth are given the same opportunities regardless of race, gender, physical and mental fitness, sexual orientation, income level, etc.

For this category we are looking for programs that are inclusive. We want personal stories demonstrating inclusiveness and we want you to give that extra effort to make everyone feel included in the things that you do.

These are the final four criteria for becoming a youth-friendly community. Information on any of the 16 criteria is welcome at any time. You can contact us via E-mail at youthfriendlykincardine@gmail.com, phone Sarah Blackwood at the Bruce Community Futures Development Corporation office at 519-396-8141 or visit the Bruce CFDC office at the corner of Huron Terrace and Broadway.

Thanks for all the support in the past weeks, and this won’t be the last you hear of Kincardine Youth Waves.
