Kincardine's new deputy clerk is not new to the municipality.

Jennifer Lawrie has been working for Kincardine for the past four years and is excited about her new job in the clerk's department.

Originally from Kitchener-Waterloo, she was working for the Canadian Cancer Society of Waterloo Region.

She and her husband, Craig Milburn, a native of Kincardine, moved here in 2006 when he was hired by Bruce Power.

Lawrie began working for the Municipality of Kincardine in 2007 in the treasury department. Last year, she switched to the clerk's department and became the licensing clerk, completing lottery licences and taxi licences, and working with council committees.

Her first day as deputy clerk was Aug. 4 and she looks forward to the challenges of her new post.

"As licensing clerk, I assisted the deputy clerk with various jobs," says Lawrie. "I'm now in the process of taking courses in the municipal administrative program, through the AMCTO (Association of Municipal Clerks and Treasurer of Ontario)."

She says the program is interesting because it includes the history of municipalities and how they work. She has four courses left to take.

As deputy clerk, she assists clerk Donna MacDougall in a variety of tasks which include drawing up the council agenda, and completing vital statistics for marriage licences, death certificates, etc. She is also secretary for Heritage Kincardine, and will fill in for the clerk at council meetings, when required.

"I'm very excited about taking on this new and different challenge," says Lawrie. "It's a great place to work. You get a good overview of the community and what's happening."

She also gets first-hand knowledge of local events because community services co-ordinator Steve Murray works in the same section of the municipal hall as the clerk's department.

When she's not working or at home, Lawrie enjoys golfing and curling and is on the board of the Kincardine Curling Club.

Meanwhile, Steve Murray has, in fact, taken on a different post as community services co-ordinator. He was economic development and tourism manager, but the economic development portion is now run by a separate corporation.

Murray is now in charge of tourism, the Kincardine Airport, and does some licensing work.
