Kincardine hockey teams have always had to travel to compete in the Central Western Ontario Secondary School Association (CWOSSA) championships.

Well, for the next two years, CWOSSA is coming to Kincardine.

Kincardine District Secondary School is hosting the CWOSSA hockey championships, both boys and girls, in 2012 and 2013.

The announcement was made at the annual CWOSSA meeting in May.

I think we got our application in at the right time,” said Dianne Pennington, who coaches the KDSS girls hockey team – the reigning CWOSSA champions. “We’re not quite certain on dates yet, but we’ll use the Tiverton and Kincardine rinks and have the full support of the municipal recreation department.”

It’s the first time CWOSSA hockey has been held in Kincardine, and the first time in six years the event will be hosted by a Bluewater Athletic Association (BAA) school.

The tournament, held annually in early to mid-March, has a two-year stint in each selected centre. Bishop Macdonell Catholic Secondary School in Guelph hosted the past two tournaments, and claimed the CWOSSA boys championship on home ice this year.

Holding the six-team provincial qualifying tournament does not gain the Knights hockey program automatic entry. Both teams must still qualify through BAA play, which both the boys and girls teams have done for five consecutive seasons. It certainly gives KDSS added incentive to win at the BAA level.

It will give our teams an advantage in that first 8 a.m. game,” said Pennington. “We’ll be at home, and someone else will have to stay overnight or travel early, and it does make a difference.”

She said the school and community have already thrown support behind the event.
