Kevin Larson, Bluewater School Board Trustee for Saugeen Shores and area, recently gave an update on the Board.

"In one of my first actions as trustee, I presented a motion to identify important values for the new board of trustees," said Larson.  "My motion, as amended, was:

'Looking to the future, yet learning from the past, we – the recently constituted board of trustees for the Bluewater District School Board – commit ourselves to adhering to the principles of openness and transparency, to engaging in full disclosure whenever possible, to being ever willing to listen to the public, staff and fellow trustees, and to remaining always accountable to the people we represent and serve'.

The motion passed unanimously. Those are our marching orders."

Larson added that, by following this motion, the Board is building both public and employee confidence.

He went to explain that the Board, with a budget of about $200 million per year, made cuts of approximately $4 million.

"The cuts were deep ... and they trouble me. But we had little choice, said Larson. "The cuts impact us and our reputation with the public and they challenge our reputation with our employees but, not passing a balanced budget would also negatively affect our reputation."

The Bluewater Board has established a financial advisory committee to begin working on the 2012-2013 budget, beginning in the fall.  According to Larson, the move may avoid the last minute rush that happened this year.

"There was a time when municipal politicians worked with trustees – to establish tax rates to pay for the education programs provided by your school board," Larson pointed out, "but how we pay for education has changed – which is a good thing. It has however, eliminated the good dialogue between the school board and municipal politicians."
