The Peerless 'one', maintained by the Marine Heritage Society in Southampton, worked tirelessly for 10 years carrying work crews and visitors back and forth to Chantry Island. The work crews travelled on her daily going to Chantry Island every summer morning to maintain the lighthouse, Keeper's Quarters home and the gardens. Tourists from around the world also travelled on her throughout the summer months to see the restoration that has taken place on the island. Today, a new boat, the Peerless Two, has replaced the original. At Monday's Saugeen Shores Town Council meeting (August 29), it was announced that the original Peerless had been sold for $8,100. The new vessel cost $122,000 and the Marine Heritage Society is fundraising to pay the outstanding amount owing to the Town, which provided a loan to the Society for the purchase. It was also recommended, and passed, at Monday night's meeting that the $8,100 be put toward the outstanding amount owing on the new boat. Councilor Diane Huber also said that fundraising efforts had, in fact, raised considerable monies that would go toward the loan. According to Town Treasurer, Lori Sweiger however, no funds had been received by the Town in 2011 although the Marine organization had paid more than the $10,000 initial payment agreed upon. |
