Grade 9 students had a chance to familiarize themselves with Kincardine District Secondary School yesterday (Sept. 6) as they were the only ones there for the first day of school. Welcomed by the Link Crew (Grades 11 and 12 students), the Grade 9s enjoyed several activities in the gym in the morning, followed by lunch and tours of the school in the afternoon. They were able to get their planners, lockers and combination locks, and do a quick run-through of their schedules, locating all their classrooms and meeting their teachers. Link Crew staff advisor Peter Wolfe says the school has been doing this for several years and it's a great way to introduce Grade 9s to the KDSS community. Most groups have a theme - some dressing up as jack-o-lanterns, others for a birthday party, and others in Hawaiian grass skirts, and they have a lot of fun. The remainder of the students start school Wednesday (Sept. 7). Roselyn Hurst, a new teacher who was let go due to declining enrollment in June, is back teaching Grade 11 accounting at KDSS. And there is the possibility that Erin Armstrong, also a new teacher, will be returning as well. |
