The Southport Chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) are concerned about road safety in Saugeen Shores. Carolyn Day and Cheryl Kryzaniwsky, CFUW Advocacy Chair, expressed the organization's concerns over crossings within Southampton in particular. "We have observed traffic over the summer," said Day, "and the speed and lack of stopping for the existing road crossings are a worry, both for children and senior pedestrians." On behalf of the CFUW, Day requested that the town remove the old-style crosswalks and install new ones using pedestrian generated stoplights. "Traffic is simply not stopping or even slowing down for the ordinary crosswalk and, in many cases, pedestrians are afraid to use them," said Day. "We recommend that crossings with actual pedestrian generated stoplights, such as those in place in Port Elgin, be installed in the town of Southampton at the busiest locations." The group also recommended that the speed limit be standardized throughout Saugeen Shores at 40kmh and that the bicycle lanes recently installed at the north end of Southampton have easily recognized symbols that designate bike use rather than the multi-use diamond symbols currently used. Town staff will be looking into the recommendations presented by the CFUW.
