The Bluewater Outdoor Education Center (OEC) has achieved another first with the opening of a first-class sky observatory.

The observatory is part of the unique outdoor education facility located between Oliphant and Wiarton, Bruce County (Ontario).  The major telescope in the centre was donated by the University of Guelph with others provided  by Astronomical Society members.

The observatory features a fully retractable roof that will enable full night sky views with the 'new' telescope in Bruce County, one of the most highly recognized dark sky regions.

The telescope was presented to the Bruce County facility following a province-wide competition.  The main criteria that resulted in the telescope being awarded to the OEC was the fact that it [telescope] would be available to the public.

E.S. Fox Contracting donated $75,000 to the facility in addition to 'in-kind' contributions.

Since the Outdoor Education facility became part of the Blue Water School Board (BWSB) more than 150,000 students have taken part in the various activities throughout its almost 30 years of operation.  It is one of the unique outdoor facilities that allows elementary school students the opportunity to learn hands-on about the environment and wildlife.
