The Bowman House of Southampton

She's long been the 'grande dame' of homes in Southampton but 'to every time there is a changing' and the Bowman House has come to her time of change.

The Bowman (Baumann) family originally came from Switzerland to Pennsylvania in the 1700s.  It wasn't until 1832, when Issac Baumann was born  to the son of John Baumann, that the family settled on the bank  of the Conestoga River at St. Jacobs.

At the age of 21, he became a public school teacher but was always active in politics.  In 1864, he was nominated and elected as a member for the last parliament of old Canda by the Reform party, defeating the Honourable Michael Hamilton Foley.  In 1867, when Confederation was formed he was defeated but was again elected in 1871 and 1874.

He held a seat in the House of Commons, was President of the Ontario Fire & Life Insurance Companies and the Mercantile Insurance Company. He lived in Waterloo, married Lydia, daughter of Jacob and Anna Bowman and had two sons, including Charles Martin Bowman.  It was Bowman who resided in Southampton from 1895 and was part of the leather business with Cadder Matheson.

Today, the Bowman House remains the 'grande dame' on Southampton's High Street, but is now for sale. The home was bequeathed to Glory Anne Bowman on the death of her husband, John (the last of the Bowman line).  "Although I love the home," says Bowman, "it is time to move one.  The home has always been a family home filled with children and now it isn't.  I would like to see it become a family home again."

On October 1st, the contents of the historical home will be auctioned at the home.  "Many people have told me they would like a 'remembrance' of the Bowman House and so I decided to hold an auction where people would have the opportunity to acquire a piece of Southampton history," says Bowman.  "Most of the pieces are original to the home."
