Randall DeKraker is the new principal at Kincardine District Secondary School

Randall DeKraker has been a vice-principal for almost a decade and is now ready for the challenge of the principal's job at Kincardine District Secondary School.

Originally from Tillsonburg, he is familiar with small towns, having grown up on a farm between Tillsonburg and Aylmer.

''Moving to Walkerton and Hanover was not too difficult,'' he says.

He began his teaching career at Walkerton District Secondary School in 1988, teaching physics, math, Grades 9 and 10 science, and a senior philosophy course.

After 14 years, he became vice-principal at John Diefenbaker Secondary School (JDSS) in Hanover, and three years later he took on the job of vice-principal at Grey Highlands Secondary School in Flesherton where he stayed for six years before coming to KDSS.

It's ironic that he is taking over from retiring principal Deb Kaufman at KDSS.

''She was the vice-principal at WDSS when I was there and she was principal at JDSS when I came there as vice-principal,'' says DeKraker.

While he has always enjoyed teaching, DeKraker says he wanted a new challenge so he decided to move into the management end of education.

''It is really different to being a classroom teacher,'' he says. ''You have different responsibilities. As a teacher, you`re thinking about your classroom and your students and helping them. As an administrator, you have to consider the whole school in every decision. You have to think about how everyone will be affected.''

''We'll get the proper staffing in place and students will find their classes and hopefully everything goes smoothly,'' he says, ''and I need to get to know the staff and students and the community.''

The 48-year-old DeKraker has a good sense of humour which, he admits, will help him out in his new role as principal at KDSS.

He and his wife, Edie, live northeast of Hanover. They have two grown children and two grandchildren.
