James Scongack, Head of Corporate Affairs for Bruce Power gave a company update to Saugeen Shores Town Council on Monday (Sept. 26).

"Two outages remain in 2011," he explained.  "Unit 5 at Bruce B will begin a normal outage next month that will bring 700 workers into the region, which help drive our local economy, and which represents a $90million investment."

"In addition," he added,  "Unit 3 will begin early in November for six months and is a $300 million investment that will require over 1,000 temporary workers."

According to Scongack, the re-start at Bruce Power is now over 90 per cent complete.   "We reached a major milestone with the approval and completion of the fuel load in Unit 2.  We also continue to produce up to 25 per cent of Ontario's electricity and there have been nearly 4.3 million hours worked year to date without an acute lost-time injury."

A 'Bruce Renewal Team Initiative' began at the beginning of the year to expand communications with communities.  The outreach effort will continue until mid-2012.  "We have invested $111 million in communities over the past 10 years and, recently, to celebrate our 10th anniversary, distributed 200 scholarships to local students."

When asked what the future would be for nuclear, Scongack explained that there was a long term energy plan and that nuclear will continue to provide 50 per cent of the Province's electricity.  "Refurbishments for Bruce and Darlington are ongoing," he said. "We recognize we are a base-load provider and play a significant role and we will continue to advocate for a continuing role."

Mayor Mike Smith said that it will be 'a first' when all eight units come on.
