The Grade 10 Hospitality and Tourism Class have been working on expanding the Breakfast Club in our school.

The students first sent out a survey to the student body to determine if there was a need/desire for a larger breakfast club.  The response was 160 out of 200 students surveyed said YES!  We will be marketing the breakfast club with posters and announcements to bring awareness and make it a success but,  WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Adult volunteers are needed to open the doors and be there during breakfast club times (8:20-8:55am) along with student volunteers who will be there to help.

Objectives:

  • To provide the option of a free and healthy breakfast to all students.
  • Provide an open and safe area students feel comfortable either staying to socialize or grabbing some food to go.
  • Reduce absenteeism at school (and lates in the morning)
  • Improve attention in the classroom
  • Improve knowledge of healthy eating choices and the positive impact it can make (in a relaxed and informal method)
  • Be financially self-sufficient and sustainable

Food will be provided and students will be helping themselves and cleaning up afterward:

* cereal and milk

* toast with jam or peanut butter

* juice

* cheese

* nutritious muffins or other products from gr.10 class (following the food and beverage policy)

* granola bars (for snacks during day)

"I’m incorporating the marketing and food production for the breakfast club into my Grade 10 Hospitalities class and have found many students wish to get their volunteer hours this way," explains Amy Trelford. "With student volunteers, the amount of work for the adult volunteer will mostly consist of unlocking the door and being present.  Of course, any amount of help would be very appreciated.

The class and I are getting excited to run this.  I feel it’s a very important program and the more parents and community members we can recruit, the better chance we have of maintaining it beyond this semester."
