Dear Editor,

Differences of opinion and lively debate are part of the democratic process. I would welcome voters to make an informed decision prior to Election Day.  That being said, I am disappointed at the tone and nature of an ad by my PC opponent, given its personal, fearful, and misleading content.

Our PC candidate suggests that voters shouldn’t be “fooled” when it comes to our healthcare - but the real deception lies in her own message. She takes aim at our local hospital projects, wait times, modernized health records, and our LHINs.

Is there more to be done in these areas? Of course. But I am very proud of what we’ve accomplished in Huron-Bruce, and think it’s something to celebrate and build upon - not condemn our shared success.

I have worked hard as your MPP to move our hospital redevelopments forward. What our PC candidate needs to understand, is that these things take time. I am proud of our work.

I hear from constituents facing serious health problems, and they say thanks for the difference we have made in their lives, rather than asking for an apology.

In 2003, surgical wait times were the worst in Canada. Today, they’re the best in the country and continuing to improve. In Huron-Bruce, 50 more doctors are on the ground and over 60,000 more patients are being served.

Local voices matter. Our LHINS have replaced 51 layers of bureaucracy in Toronto and saved millions of dollars. They keep decisions in the community, where they belong. My opponent wants to stifle our local voice.

I would encourage my opponent to take a hard look at the progress happening on the ground in our communities.

Her accusations suggest she fails to understand healthcare in this riding and the degree to which the community has worked to move us forward.

Carol Mitchell

Liberal Candidate, Huron-Bruce
