Wiarton Steppers Square Dance Club is celebrating 30 successful years this Saturday evening (October 1) with a dance in the Wiarton Arena hall. This Saturday's event will feature special full-time caller Jim Lee, from Stoney Creek to call the dance. The club started 30 years ago with 13 squares of new people the first night. Over the years, they have maintained an average of six squares and have danced at fairs, in retirement homes, street displays, international plowing matches and many parades. They have also had the same caller, Lorne Lockrey, for the full 30 years. Unlike ballroom or social dancing, there is no fancy footwork. Square dancing is simple and primarily is briskly walking in patterns that are easy to learn. If you can walk, you can square dance. The caller, Lorne Lockrey’s melodious voice is easy on the ears as he sings and talks everyone through the moves. He entertains with light-hearted joking, putting beginners at ease while experienced dancers guide 'newbees' around the pattern. There is generally lots of laughter as dancers bump into each other and go the wrong direction. Everyone’s missteps make square dancing fun and that's what the club is all about. Nobody expects perfection, so nobody needs to feel self-conscious. The regular dance venue is the old Propeller Club (The Meeting Place) in Wiarton every Monday night and the club encourages new people to come out and give it a try for fun and fitness. While everyone does have fun, it's also a way to benefit from the cardiovascular exercise ... a great way to get healthier, happier and make new friends, all at the same time. Monday, October 3 is an open night and all ages, singles or couples, are welcome to come out and try a great fun and fitness activity at 7:00 p.m. at The Meeting Place (Wiarton Propeller Club) or call 519-389-4168 for more information.
