It's the end of the line for the seven cottages at Poplar Beach, between the 12th and 10th concessions, west of Boiler Beach Road, in the former Huron Township.

After a legal battle last summer, Huron-Kinloss Township came to a settlement with the cottage owners, at the Landlord and Tenant Board, stating the leases would expire and the land vacated by Sept. 25 this year.

Initially, the cottagers were told in 2008 that the leases were set to expire in two years, and they would have to leave Sept. 25, 2010.

However, the owners argued last summer that if there were environmental problems and issues with the cottages, they could be rectified.

The settlement reached last September, indicated the tenants had until Sept. 25, 2011, which was this past Sunday, to remove the cottages or portions thereof. And as of Sept. 26 (Monday), all right, title and interest in the cottages would reside with the township.

At the council meeting Monday night (Sept. 19), council discussed a letter received from Miles and Beverley Dadson, noting they are vacating their buildings but wanted to remove a shed that is behind the cottage. Because of the location of trees on the property, they are unable to move the shed without taking a tree down.

They asked if they would be allowed to remove the shed after the other buildings were taken down so they could retrieve it without destroying any trees.

Staff told council that it has not made any arrangements to demolish or remove the buildings this fall.

Administrator Mary Rose Walden said the township takes possession of the property Sept. 30. "We take ownership of the land, not the buildings," she added.

Councillor Carl Sloetjes said council should send a letter to the Dadsons that the township will do its best not to damage the shed when it demolishes the cottages and they could pick it up later.

Council agreed.
