Local singer Brontae Hunter wants to help children in eastern Africa who are hungry and have no bed to sleep in at night.

So, the St. Anthony's School student and the school's student council are doing something about it.

Brontae, 11, came to Kincardine council Wednesday night (Sept. 21) and, during the public forum portion, told the municipality that she and her fellow students are hosting a concert at Knox Presbyterian Church, Kincardine, Oct. 1 at 7:30 p.m., in support of the Free the Children organization.

"Younger children and children our age go to bed hungry, often starving, without a bed to sleep in," she said. "They end up sleeping on the floor or on the ground. It's not fair!

"I have resources to live a good life, so my friends and I are holding a concert to support this cause. Even if you do a little, it's going to help get meals and beds for children in eastern Africa.

Brontae said that often the question is posed: Why help children in third-world countries when there are children in Canada going without food or a bed?

"Wherever there is poverty in this world, it needs to be addressed," she said. "I would do my best to support kids in Canada who have no food or beds. But just because there's poverty here, does mean we can ignore poverty overseas.

"You should try to help whoever you can, whenever you can."

Council thanked Brontae for her presentation and wished her and her fellow students great success at the concert.
