The following letter was sent to the principal, office manager and staff of Ripley-Huron Community School, following the lockdown Sept. 15.

Thank you very much for providing the students and their parents with a letter, explaining what went on during the lockdown of the school Sept. 15. It was nice to see it appear in their school bags.

When we received the phone call, teacher Janet Browne stressed that the children were not in any direct danger due to the circumstances going on outside the school.

We were reassured that they were safe and that constable Kevin Martin was in the school with the children keeping an eye on what was going on inside the school and out; and knowing that they would be sent home when all was safe.

We are happy that the OPP took into consideration the school and the students' safety. They could have let all the students go and this might not have turned out well. We expect some students may have slipped through the cracks, but not having a lockdown before, we feel that the students and staff did all they could,

As much as an inconvenience that this might have been for some parents, our children were where they should have been in this situation - our children were safe. We have full faith that if constable Martin claims our children were safer in the school then outside, he would know best.

We have known constable. Martin for many years and believe that he would treat anyone's children as if they were his own in a situation like this. Lucky that I (Sarah) was at home the day of the lockdown and was able to receive the phone call.

Please pass on the "thanks" to the rest of the staff and students who worked hard on this to get the word out. Regardless of some parents' remarks, what is done is done, and knowing more information about the situation will make for a little better understanding the next time.

Job well done!
