Rain played havoc on plans for Huron Heights Public School students and staff to go for a Terry Fox Run outside Friday afternoon.

However, they still managed to raise $1,616.61 for cancer research in a Terry Fox Walk inside the school.

Organized by teacher Carole Ann MacDonald, the event began with an assembly, recognizing several students and staff who had made sizeable donations, including Sammie Maurer, $32; Maddie Mitchell, $50; former teacher Dorothy McKegney, $145; and Sarah Hobbs, $651.

The school also raised $780.61 from collections held during the previous week.

MacDonald's class then read the poem, "It Couldn't Be Done," by Edgar Guest, which Terry Fox read to himself as encouragement during his Marathon of Hope.

"It Couldn't Be Done"

Somebody said that it couldn't be done,
But he with a chuckle replied
That "maybe it couldn't," but he would be one
Who wouldn't say so till he'd tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn't be done, and he did it.

Somebody scoffed: "Oh, you'll never do that;
At least no one ever has done it;"
But he took off his coat and he took off his hat,
And the first thing we knew he'd begun it.
With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,
Without any doubting or quiddit,
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn't be done, and he did it.

There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,
There are thousands to prophesy failure;
There are thousands to point out to you one by one,
The dangers that wait to assail you.
But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,
Just take off your coat and go to it;
Just start to sing as you tackle the thing
That "cannot be done," and you'll do it.

The Grades 3 and 4 students walked in the gym, while the Grades 5 and 6 students walked in the hall and through the library, and the Grades 7 and 8 students walked in their hallway.

They then gathered back in the gym to watch a couple of Terry Fox movies.

Liam Colhoun (L), Robert McGregor and Trent Courtney, Grade 4, hold their sign high: "Terry Fox Rocks"

Holding their sign high are Kennedy Farrell (L), McKinna Colley, Emma Anderson and Georgia Tanner
