Students at local schools learned a bit about university women's hockey across Canada, when players visited the classrooms Thursday afternoon. Players with the University of Lethbridge (Alberta) Pronghorns were at Elgin Market Public School, talking with the primary-aged children about hockey and the challenges of the sport at the university level. Kayla Hopkins, 23, of Saskatchewan, and Amy Van Buskirk, 21, of Manitoba, have been playing hockey for a long time. And yes, they like to hear the crowd cheering them on; it's not distracting. Kathryn Manson, 22, of Saskatchewan told the class of Grades 1 and 2 students that she broke her arm in a game last year. The Pronghorns were playing in Germany and a player ran into her, snapping her radius. The Pronghorns are one of four teams playing in the first-ever Canadian IntraUniversity Sport (CIS) Hockey Great Lakes Challenge tournament at the Davidson Centre, running today (Sept. 30) to Sunday (Oct. 2). Joining the Pronghorns are the University of Regina (Saskatchewan) Cougars, the York University (Ontario) Lions, and the University of Guelph (Ontario) Gryphons. The teams are playing six games over the three days, with proceeds going toward the Davidson Centre Revitalization Fund. And local girls hockey teams are playing a couple of games throughout the weekend as well.

Four players with the Cougars went to Kincardine Township-Tiverton Public School and talked to the students there, while their teammates visited with students at Ripley-Huron Community School, St. Anthony's School, and Kincardine District Secondary School. The message they wanted to get across is that it takes a lot of practice to become good at a sport, and a lot of hard work and dedication.
