The Ripley-Huron Fall Fair got off to a soggy start Friday night with the frog-jumping contest, texting competition, and the ambassador of the fair contest.

The lawn tractor pull was cancelled due to the muddy conditions of the fields, but the midway was able to start up later in the evening.

Things were hopping in the agricultural building as dozens of children brought their frogs to compete in the frog-jumping contest.

Carl Heinisch was in charge, and Andrew MacDonald was weighing the amphibians. Some frogs seemed to have stage-fright and were unable to move, while others took great strides toward winning the contest.

Meanwhile, in the auditorium upstairs at the Ripley Complex, the contestants in the ambassador competition were answering impromptu questions and giving their speeches.

Vying for the position were:

Maggie Freimanis, a Grade 12 student at Kincardine District Secondary School. The daughter of Kathryn and Andris Freimanis, she wants to attend the University of Toronto and study archaeology. She was sponsored by Jennifer's Beauty and Wellness.

Melinda Scott, a first-year student at Ridgetown College. The daughter of Marty and Sue Scott, her goal is to work on a farm or for an artificial insemination company. She was sponsored by Farmer's Diner.

Amberly Keelan, a Grade 12 student at Sacred Heart High School in Walkerton. The daughter of Paul and Heather Keelan, she plans to pursue a career in business. Her sponsor was Marvin's Automotive.

Emily Lotton, a Grade 12 student at Kincardine District Secondary School. The daughter of Gail and Ron Lotton, she plans to attend Conestoga College and pursue a career in accounting. She was sponsored by Greg Ackert Carpentry.

After careful deliberation, Amberly was chosen the 2011-12 ambassador. Maggie was runner-up, and Emily was Miss Congeniality.

Ripley singer Alexandra Chapleau entertained the crowd. Then local auctioneer Rob Thompson offered his own brand of entertainment as he helped auction the prize-winning pies and cakes, as well as field corn and corn stalks. The auction raised $2,100 for the Goderich Disaster Relief Fund.

As her reign came to an end, 2010-11 ambassador Dayna Simpson thanked the Ripley Agricultural Society for a great year.

"I spent a lot of time with these people and I have a new respect for what the agricultural society does," she said.

She competed at the Toronto Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) and the Miss Mid-West contest. She said she learned a lot, had a wonderful time, and made many new friends.

"One thing I learned is that if you want people to listen to your ideas, you have to stand up and be a leader," she said.
